Not far from the Hungarian Parliament, there are 60 pairs of iron shoes on the Danube bank, pointing towards the river. The haunting Holocaust memorial in Budapest was erected in 2005 to commemorate the Jews who were rounded up on the banks of the Danube and had to take off their shoes before they were shot into the water during the second World War. In 2016, the memorial was chosen to be the world's second-best public statue.
