Built in 1903 and named after Empress Elizabeth, the original Elizabeth Bridge was known as the longest suspension bridge of the world. Unfortunately, it was blown up by the Germans at the end of WWII in 1945. A completely new, wider cable bridge was constructed nearly two decades later and opened in 1964. The current Elizabeth Bridge is 379 meters long, connecting the city center with the foot of Gellért Hill.
